About us

Welcome to Autism Unpicked®

We offer in person, private, multidisciplinary child and young adult Autism assessments and combined Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) assessments with no wait times in Sheffield and surrounding areas (i.e., Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Manchester) for young people aged 6-25 years.

In person assessments can also be carried out with children and young adults from further afield (e.g., Lincolnshire, West Yorkshire or elsewhere).

Please be aware of the need to travel to one of our Sheffield or Derbyshire locations for the face to face appointment for children. For adults, we are able to work online as appropriate but can also see you in person.

We are a team of specialist qualified Clinical Psychologists and Speech and Language Therapists experienced and trained in assessing children and young people for Autism and ADHD. The team have significant NHS experience and are registered with the health and care regulator, The Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC). We have specialist experience in understanding Autism in women and girls alongside all genders. We have also conducted research and lecture in these areas.

All of our assessments are completed in line with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines and are based on the established practice of our NHS experience. Please see our frequently asked questions for more information.

At Autism Unpicked we aim to ‘unpick’ what is happening to make sense of an individual's unique profile, including both their strengths and needs.  This may include making a diagnosis. We aim to work in a person-centred, collaborative way meaning the needs of the child or young adult and their family are our priority.  We are a specialist team who understand the range of ways neurodivergence may present including more subtly (e.g., we see this sometimes in women and girls).  We are committed to supporting the wellbeing of neurodivergent people and we keep up to date with our understanding via clinical work, listening to autistic people's views, training and conducting and supervising research.

If the child or young adult does receive a diagnosis, this is known as a neurodevelopmental condition.  This means it relates to how the brain has developed and is lifelong.  We aim to offer a clear understanding of Autism and/or ADHD for the child or young person and/or their family and what it means for them.  We do this by offering a balance of focusing on strengths and skills, and considering the things they may find hard so that we can offer the most supportive recommendations.

We are able to offer post-diagnostic support on a case by case basis if this is something you want or need.  We also offer training packages and one-off consultations to schools, workplaces and businesses. â€‹

There will always be one in person element of assessment for children, but for adults, we can complete the assessment online if appropriate.

*Occasionally we may use the term Autism Spectrum Disorder in some of our reports/on our website when sharing resources.  This is the diagnostic term used in the diagnostic manual (DSM-V) which we use alongside our clinical decision making to consider if someone meets the criteria for our child Autism and ADHD assessments and adult Autism assessments.  Therefore, this is the term we will use on your official documents to be clear about the specific diagnosis made so you can access appropriate support. The terms 'disorder' and 'deficit' are part of the diagnostic labels for Autism or ADHD.  However, we recognise the terminology may not be in keeping with personal preferences or in line with our understanding of neurodivergence or our preferred language.

We aim to be balanced and neuro-affirming in our report writing and use your preferences in all of our interactions.  However, we will provide clear information for you to access the support you may need.
